Many vessels are already 20–30 years old, and the equipment installed on board may also be very old or obsolete. In some cases, the vessel may be scheduled for scrapping within the next one or two years.
To reduce costs, owners may prefer not to replace the existing course recorder with an expensive new system, especially when the original printer is obsolete or the Naviprint output is no longer compatible with the existing printer.
A relatively low-cost solution is available, provided that the gyrocompass can output an NMEA HDT sentence.
A UDR (Universal Digital Repeater) can be installed to receive the NMEA HDT data from the gyrocompass. The UDR can then be configured to transmit the required Naviprint output sentence to an Epson LQ-310 dot-matrix printer.
This arrangement provides a practical and cost-effective solution for older vessels where replacing the complete course recorder system may not be economical.
Please refer to the attached drawing for the connection arrangement.
